earth  Where are they now..?
This page is for you to let the rest of the POPnet world know where you've ended up.  Perhaps you've started your own business, are backpacking through Nepal, or juggle raw fish at Seattle's Pike Street Market.  Or maybe you still live with your parents.  Who cares.  Send in a few lines about what you're up to and what your former handle was, and include an email address and a webpage if you'd like people to be able to contact you.  Email your entry to reunion@mcquaker.org.

Cathy Pearl
(Ford Prefect)

After Cathy's plans to become a paleontologist in South Dakota fell through, she decided to go to UCSD instead, where she learned about a crazy little thing called Cognitive Science.  Then she worked for a wireless communications company on a device with wires.  Then she went to Indiana University for two years where she learned about an even crazier thing called Human Computer Interaction.  Then she got out of the midwest, hopefully for good.  She was working at NASA Ames in Mountain View until recently, when they found out she was trying to sneak aboard the next Mars mission. Now she works for Nuance, a speech recognition company whose software is coming soon to a location near you.

She has 236,602 minutes on POPnet.

Andy Lloyd
(Baron Harkonnen,
Bevatron Repairman)

Apparently, the only person on-line who doubted Mr. Lloyd would become a lawyer was Mr. Lloyd.  They were, of course, right.  After an academic gravity assist, UCR-Clark-Berkeley, and a brief stint in the political arena, Mr. Lloyd graduated  from the University of Chicago Law School, clerked for a federal judge in Little Rock, Arkansas, and is now a corporate attorney with Thelen Reid and Priest, LLP, in San Francisco.  He likes to believe his life is a lot different these days.  He is, however, living in Lafayette, and dating a POPnetter.

He writes science fiction shorts, and is currently not working on his novel, Launch Window.

Mr. Lloyd has 178,043 minutes on line.

Clete Spehr
(Brainwasher)

After graduating from De La Salle HS in 1989, Clete's plans to be a professional rock guitarist fell through when he encountered reality. Moved to Texas with his father in '93. After basically screwing around for several years, Clete re-entered the educational system as a Computer Science major. Clete went through several years of community college, restoring his academic standing (probation from DVC!) enough to finally be admitted to The University of North Texas. Clete owns a home in Denton, TX, and is a computer systems manager for the College of Arts & Sciences General Access Computer Labs within UNT. Clete's steady girlfriend, Mary, works downstairs from him and Jazzersizes every day.

I don't know how many minutes I had on POPnet. I was, however, lifeline.

Matt Gomes
(Bloodguard Brinn)

Matt graduated from Santa Clara University with a degree in Computer Engineering.  Two years later he received his master's degree at San Jose State in Instructional Technology (Education).  He is currently working at Knowledge Universe as a Test Development Manager.  He was married in 1994, and, on April 7, 1999, Clare and Matt had their first child - Conor Makai.  They currently live in Pleasanton, CA. Yes... Matt still performs magic...Poof*

Kenrick Mock
(Mach Three)

After graduating from Northgate High School in 1986, Kenrick gave up his Lifeline access and was rarely seen on POPnet again. From there he was destined to spend the next ten years of his life amongst the cows at UC Davis. As a result of playing too many Infocom games, he was eventually sucked into natural language processing and artificial intelligence and received a Ph.D. in computer science in 1996. Nowadays he is a professor at the University of Alaska Anchorage teaching computer science. To this day, the cruel POPnet influence still remains; Kenrick can typically be found on IRC using the nickname "Mach" and likes to write multi-player chat games. He aspires to one day grow a Fu-Manchu mustache or at least a grizzly alaskan prospector's beard.

Ted Fristrom
(Drawde, Palmer Eldritch)

Age:  28.  Sex:  M.  Hobbies:  writing, cooking, growing herbs, and re-writing Dilbert for people who work in English departments.   I don't know which is more embarrassing, the fact that my primary handle never had an official pronunciation or that I remember at least five other ones.  Fortunately, I chose a single personality somewhere in the 1990s, and have stuck with it ever since.  I finished up the usual hyphenated college education which leaves me currently enrolled in the graduate student reserves in New York (SUNY Albany).  I'm only required to put in a few weeks of face time during the year, however.  The rest, I spend in the suburbs of Philadelphia.  I live with my girlfriend, a full boku teacher cum laude at St. Joseph's University.  She of course, brings home most of the bacon. I hang out, wasting the state's money doing what I would be doing anyway: (see hobbies).  Wisdom:  If it can't be said in fewer then forty-eight characters, it isn't worth quoting.

C. Ivan Cooper
(Stingray)

After getting a B.A. (it's an art) in computer programming from UC Berkeley, Ivan ran a small business computer consulting company for a while. He eventually decided that business management is for suits, and now works as a software engineer in Concord, CA for Secure Computing Corporation, who he likes because they don't make him use Windows, they buy him lots of really fast computers with large monitors, and then they pay him to use them. Dang! Ivan's currently working on restoring his black '74 Super Beetle. He enjoys cycling, hiking, building computers, and foozball, and no, he hasn't gotten any better at volleyball. Ivan invites you to contact him.

Kristin Nelson
(Skikitt)

Kristin Nelson, that wacky kooky tall girl, graduated from UCDavis in International Relations and Spanish. She managed a student painting business in Walnut Creek for a year then became an Account Manager (sales) for AirTouch Paging. Two years ago, she participated in a Rotary business exchange program which led her on a tour of Denmark. Kristin met her current boyfriend in the Hard Rock Cafe in Copenhagen, and being the adventurous type, transferred her job with AirTouch to Boca Raton, Florida, where she and Chris (The Boyfriend) live. She is now a Major Account Exec with AirTouch and plans to marry her hunka-hunka-burning love. Also, she is VERY happy because her fabulous brother, MARK NELSON (whom you may remember as "Skicat"), just got married to a cool chick in March.

I sure as HELL don't remember how many minutes I had, either, but I was lifeline as well. :)

Jamie Fristrom
(Beauregard)

I'm kicking it on the eleventh floor of an office building in LA with an ocean view and a view of the airport and a view of some industrial wasteland. I'm still a wannabe writer, and either I'm pretty good or people like to butter me up, so go to my web-site and read everything that I rated 7 or higher. Then join my mailing list and tell your friends about me. I have a plant that's lived over two years.

Brian Augustine
(Dargoth)

I have just recently moved back to the Bay Area, after doing a 2 year tour in Houston where I worked internal technical support for Compaq. I am now doing consulting work as an NT Sysadmin. I can also be reached on the MUD that I run, which you can reach by telneting to necromium.com 4000, or you can view its web site at http://www.necromium.com

Keith Rosicker
(Kiko)

After partying and BSing my way through business school, I ended up as an Accountant for a healthcare management company in San Ramon called PriMed. I've been there nearly 2 years, and they are now moving me to the Revenue department to become a Revenue Analyst. Recent travels have taken me as far away as India where I saw a friend's wedding in Bombay and the Taj Mahal in Agra. And what's a message from me without a little SOCCER content??? Well, on my way to India, I stopped in England to see Liverpool thrash Southampton 7-1 and Colchester lose to Wrexham 3-1. What else? Umm, I almost proposed to a girl back in '96, but she dumped me before I could get the words out. I am once again living with my parents, but I almost have enough to put a down payment on a condo or something like that. Uh...that's it, I guess. Kurt Schultz
(Thipdar)

(AKA: Thipdar, Khirad Shah, Helvius Pertinax, Bandwidth Sculptor, STGM, and probably others as well)

Lately, I've been playing a lot of Hover, Minesweeper and Freecell.

Dunno if I've gone over 1Megaminutes of online time yet, but it's possible.

Frank and Judy Orem
(Da Cheef and Her Maj)

We now live in Lake Oswego, OR at the river's edge not the lake. We enjoy seeing what you have done so far with your lives. This all brings back great memories. If we can find where we packed our POPnet stuff we'll send it along.

We have a lot of minutes of log on time. Can't count that high! but then you have heard how it is as one gets to that forgetful stage. Of course we haven't gotten to it yet but can forget anyway.

We've been doing some traveling including going with Rob and Little Mouse to New Zealand last Nov/Dec. A must see place!

Jason Schultz
(Copycat)

After graduating high school, I left my beloved California for Duke University in the muggy Southeastern state of North Carolina. There, among other things, I majored in public policy and women's studies. Yes, that's right, women's studies. And no, it didn't get me any dates. After graduating from Duke, I stayed in the South, working for the University in the student affairs dept. and freelancing for various magazines. Soon after, however, I returned home to SF and took employment as a management consultant on corporate diversity issues. After playing around with that for a bit, I decided to return to my geek roots and entered law school at Berkeley, specializing in intellectual property and technology law. I'm currently in my 3rd year. This past summer I worked at the law firm of Fish & Richardson (www.fr.com) on intellectual property litigation cases (patent, copyright, trademark). After graduation, I'll be clerking for a federal district court judge in Oakland for a year and then returning to Fish as an associate.

On a more personal note, I'm still quite a smart ass (which works to your advantage in law school) and to almost no one's surprise, still single.

Minutes logged: 202,129.

Ray Coffey
(Cosmic Jester)

Former Sysop of POPnet San Ramon (ran it for Mr. Dewdrop). Currently I am in Biloxi, Mississippi working as a Casino Surveillance Supervisor. I ran for the US House of Reps in 1998 for the Mississippi 5th Congressional Seat as a Libertarian and came in Third Place out of 5. I think the Reunion should be Christmas week. I will be in the SF Bay Area then.

Vanessa (Benford) Bisogni
(Griffin)

After leaving Lafayette, I went to university at UC Santa Barbara (yes, it IS a party school) and got a degree in economics. After that, I moved to Hermosa Beach (Los Angeles) and started working for Arthur Andersen, a public accounting firm. After three crazy years in LA (and equally as crazy people!), I transferred to our London office for one year. Coincidentally, a guy from our Melbourne, Australia office also transferred to London at the same time. We met, fell in love, and the rest is history. After my year in London I then transferred to Melbourne (for obvious reasons), where I presently live. I still work at the same company as a financial consultant and I work on special projects (ie - IPO's, acquisitions and take overs). If anyone is coming to Australia, give me a ring!

Tim Tait
(Raistlin)

After graduating from Northgate (and POPnet) I went on to get a B.S. in Physics at UCSD, where I learned to like the sun and the Ocean. Being a glutton for punishment, I went on to graduate school at Michigan State University / Argonne National Lab and finished a PhD in theoretical particle physics in May of 1999. I now work as a post-doc at Argonne, in Chicago, though thanks to the academic world's equivalent of "migrant worker status", I will have to look for something else after about three years or so. What do I do? Well, technically I solve the mysteries of the universe, which seems to involve a lot of writing down things on the blackboard (or on paper, unused napkins at restaurants, whatever is handy...) and sitting in front of a computer screen.

I got married in July of 1999 on the island of Sardegna (Sardinia in English) and I was over-whelmed by the POPnet presence, which really proved once and for all that some friends you NEVER lose. My wife is a beautiful Italian woman, who is also a physicist, so be afraid, be very afraid. Our hobbies include going to the movies and wishing we could return to either of the two warmer climates we grew up in.

Don Moretz
(Don Quixote)

After failing miserably at becoming a rock star, he did a stint in DVC, got bored of that and started working, well really it was to pay the bills while his fiancee, Rachel, finished her BA at UCSC, so he's been travelling around the country installing WAN/LAN kinda stuff, and showing idiots how to try and use it. Now he will be looking for a nice Net Admin job, oooo, that would be the life.....

Living in roughly the same area, sometimes, when he's home.

After working for a bit, Don intends to finish his AA and pursue a BA in Music Composition at UCSC.

 I had a little over 100k minutes.

Mark Nelson
(Skicat)

After graduating from CSUS back in the bleak recession days of '92, I decided to pack up shop and move to San Diego.  I figured that if I was to be poor, I might as well be poor in a temperate climate.  I took up surfing, got all earthy-crunchy and zenned out, and stayed surprisingly alabaster white during my time there.  Hopping around from job to job with the frequency of a cheap HAM radio (Thanks Dan) , I finally landed a job in sales with a legal service bureau....shortly afterwords I met the woman of my dreams, moved back to Sacramento, got married, bought a house, and started my own document management consulting business.  I never thought I would own a weed wacker, leaf blower, or major appliances.....I guess this is the American Dream :)  I'm thinking about getting back into the stand-up comedy realm soon (Amateur nights) and possibly open mike nights for music.

I don't know how many minutes I ever had....all I remember is stuffing five bucks in an envelope each month and slipping it under the door in a  Corporate Plaza Complex off of Oak Grove Rd.  I'm known as "Skicruiser" on Microsoft Zone and Yahoo...I play on-line games from time to time. I'm VERY happy because my fabulous sister, KRISTIN NELSON (whom you may remember as "Skikitt"), just got married to a cool dude in June. :)  Be good humans, and take care of yourselves.

Jon Wagner
(Subway Vigilante)

Back in the mid/late 80's to perhaps 1991 or so, I was a regular on the Gaithersburg, Maryland version of Popnet and also made many appearances on the Walnut Creek Popnet (I remember the phone bill!). Robby (Peter) and I traded lots of mail, and I'm fairly sure I remember chatting with Skikitt and others during the latter part of that period. I also played a lot of the online games. I'm fairly certain I used the alias Subway Vigilante on the Walnut Creek site (I'm sure I used it on the Maryland site). I finally met some of the people when I went on a business trip to Oakland in 1991. In fact, I stayed at Frank and Judy's house for a night during that trip, and Robby and some others (??? I'm not really sure of the aliases...Robby would know) drove into SF for dinner one night.

I moved from the Maryland/DC area to Southern California 3 years ago and I'm married now. We just bought a house in Irvine, and I'm employed at a software company in Lake Forest -- Wonderware -- where I manage a group that looks after software tools, networks, PC's, etc. I get up to the bay area every few months, so I could potentially drop in on another reunion if one gets organized.

Michael Bland
(Tasslehoff)

(Added 12/10/02) After graduating Northgate in 1991 and a brief stint at DVC while still in the POPnet community, Michael moved on to UC Berkeley where he graudated Valedictorian in the East Asian Languages Department. He then moved to Japan and has lived there since (about 6.5 years now). He has worked as an English Teacher, a Software Engineer, and now is the Representative Director (President) of the Tokyo Branch of a Silicon Valley hardware company. Michael was recently married to a lovely Japanese woman named Chihiro in October 2002, and they hope one day soon to return to the Bay Area.

Jeremy Huie
(Tempus)

(Added 5/19/03) Jeremy has never lived in a city that wasn't served by BART. After Acalanes, he went to Cal and tried a few majors, dropping them whenever an assignment was first due. Eventually, he settled on poli sci, geography, and mass communications, the combination of which might lead to creative employment, but instead inevitably meant law school. Jeremy got his J.D. at Hastings in San Francisco, where he teaches Legal Writing & Research. He also has a private practice as a Professional Truth Teller. Jeremy lives in Lafayette with his wife Stacey and daughters Madeleine and Miriya. When babysitters are available, Jeremy and Stacey play a wide variety of games, including competitive bridge.

Janel (Adair) Tenery
(Dark Angel)

Joined POPnet San Ramon around 1989. Was known as Kicker1 for quite a while, and then Dark Angel. I believe I was on until it closed. I consistently did the weekly pizza parties at Mountain Mikes. Moved to Atlanta, Georgia in about 1992 and joined the Time Warp BBS there for a while, where I was known as Janel Adair, Watersprite, or Raindance, until it also closed. Having been habituated towards online communities that don't suck I have once again found an online community at www.kingdomofloathing.com where I am known as Polly Chrome, and am an active member. Also an active member of livejournal, where I can be found as polychromatic22, even though most of my journal is under lock, despite being boring.  I did pull more than one 24 hour active period on POPnet. Go me?

I have been married for 9 years to a guy I met off Time Warp and work at my local Borders bookstore happily playing amongst the books, music, movies and coffee. My life is officially weird by many standards. I live in a communal house with 3 adults who are not my husband (and that I am not romantically involved with, just to quell those rumors). My husband lives here, too, to also quell those rumors. I paint, love my friends, and am just generally one of those pathetic human beings that is happy with the idea of never growing up. I am generally way more laid back then I was once. Just saying. Much love to all my old POPnet buddies.

I still talk too much, and most of what I say could have been said with much fewer words. Though I did kick that bad poetry habit quite a few years ago. Mostly.

Chris Jones
(Davros)

POPnet was great fun in my teenage days, and some of you might remember that Frank Orem (Da Chief) let me loose in coding new features for the POPnet server.   That really never amounted to much, and he eventually "let me go".  But I learned a lot in the process and went on to get my B.S. and then Masters in Computer Science at UCSB  (who wouldn't want to spend 6 years on the beach!).

I'm now a software designer at Hewlett Packard, working on kernel-level operating system code.  Frank would probably never believe it.

I'm married now to a wonderful lady named Marija, and we have an (almost) 2 year old cute little boy named Luka.
