About Us
Cathy was born in Walnut Creek, California.  At different points in her life, she wanted to be:  Arthur Duncan (a tapdancer on the Lawrence Welk Show), a game maker, a paleontologist, a librarian, and a computer programmer.  For college she went to UC San Diego, home of the Sun God, a giant chicken on a rock.  After that she went to Indiana to get a degree in Computer Science.  (Well, one out of five ain't bad).  Eventually she rejoined the working world at NASA Ames, before discovering Nuance, a speech recognition software company.

Chris was born in Chilwell, England, a suburb of Nottingham (home of Robin Hood).  The middle of three brothers, Chris spent his formative years playing football (soccer to the Americans), listening to football on the radio, watching football on the telly, and going to see as many games as possible of his favorite football team, Nottingham Forest.  Eventually he went to university at Newcastle (where they make one of his favorite beers--Newcastle Brown Ale), and then he moved on to Cambridge where he got his PhD.  In 1995 he moved to the states to take a job at a little startup (employee 14) called Nuance.  He'd never been to California before, and only once to the U.S. for a job interview in Rochester, New York.  He figured it was too cold there and too many people in suits, so he went to California instead.

How They Met
Chris and Cathy met at Nuance in 1999.  Chris was in charge of the company's volleyball teams, and cleverly put Cathy on his team.  They became friends and eventually Chris was talking Cathy into doing all kinds of crazy things like trying to snowboard, which is where Chris asked Cathy on their first date--on a ski lift at Heavenly.

The Engagement
Cathy's version:  We went to Carmel for our two-year anniversary.  We spent the weekend driving up and down the beautiful coast, checking out the scenery and eating delicious food.  On the drive back home, we stopped at the Moss Beach Distillery to watch the sunset.  Chris seemed rather nervous and kept looking around.  The sun went down, and Chris said "I'd like to spend the rest of my life with you," and I romantically responded with "Well what does that mean?"  Chris handed me a toy ring and I said yes.

Chris's verion:  We went to Carmel, and on the way home we stopped at Moss Beach, where it happened.
